Life in Jocotenango, Guatemala, a short bus ride from Antigua. I do not consider Antigua to be part of Guatemala. It is a walled gringo colony untouched by the unwashed Guatemalan culture. In Antigua "mugre" is a word and a concept. In Guatemala outside of the walls, "mugre" is a reality and the unwashed are the Guatemalan citizens. For 8 years I lived outside the walls. I now live in Chile, another planet.

She is 18, just graduated from high school, the number one academic in her class. Now she is working in a dentist's office, waiting for university. Shown with her father, I call him Frank, but he answers to Daniel. Stefania was raised in an orphanage (probably not the proper term) sponsered by a german foundation. For children whose parents don"t have sufficient resources (recursos). Now she shares a shack with Angela. Complicated story, but that is the reason for this blog.

Website design takes up my morning

Amazing what a person can do with a little knowledge.
The hardest part was ordering the new domain and server.
Credit Card details can be maddening, especially living in Chile with US banks.

How do you say "arroba" in English, in just one word?
It is not like "period" or "comma" which have unique meanings.
"at" is a preposition which can take on many meanings. We need a word for "arroba".

My family in Chile

In Chile I live 2 blocks from the south pacific ocean in a house constructed with my own hands held together entirely by screws, not nails. I adopted another mother-in-law who is shown in the foto with the first dog I have ever adopted. My compañera Ángela and her teen age sister Estefania complete the family unit.

It is cold living near the Pacific Pond. This morning I fired up the propane stove.

Ecuador is looming on my horizon And they speak Spanish up there.
The Spanish language here in Chile is almost a dialect like Valenciano in Spain
Panama is my second choice. Both Panama and Ecuador have adopted the U.S.
dollar as their currency. For me that is a plus.

Chile, Where I am (trapped in a trap of my own design)

Is there any way to escape? 5 years here and I should have left 3 years ago.
I think about heading for Panama or Ecuador. I have never been to Ecuador.
I now speak Spanish fluently I like the fact that Panama and Ecuador have adopted the U.S. dollar as their national currency. The exchange rate in Chile is now around 500 pessos per dollar. When I arrived here I was getting 620 per dollar. Quite a difference. But that is only one reason to leave.

Guatemala, where my wife is.

This is my wife, Marcela and her kids Gabriela and Javier Francisco. We lived together for 8 years in Jocotenango, Guatemala, a suburb just north of Antigua.
Below is a foto of my suegra Chela with her daughter and her grandchildren.
Whereever I go I have a mother-in-law (suegra).
Here in Chile I have adopted one. Will save that for later. I have been in Chile for 5 years now. Time to move on Should I go back to Guatemala. I don't think so.
